Tulsa Community College officially opened its Glenpool Community Campus on Dec. 5 with an open house in the old Glenpool City Hall. The former seat of government for Glenpool is now Tulsa Community College’s center of learning for Glenpool and South Tulsa County.
“Tulsa Community College had an opportunity to partner with Glenpool and respond to a community need,” said TCC President Tom McKeon. “We were able to use an existing building to provide an education environment that meets student needs. This is about using taxpayers’ dollars and state resources efficiently as we continue to meet TCC’s mission of providing services and reach into the community without expanding our overall capital costs.”
TCC started offering classes in 2008 in the building at 140 W. 141st Street but the completion of construction in recent months doubled the size of the community campus. The two-story building and former Glenpool City Hall has undergone three phases of renovations led by Kinslow, Keith and Todd Architects. The construction removed any sign of jail cells and city offices and created eight classrooms, a computer lab, testing center and a front desk area to help students.
The classrooms are multi-purpose, multi-media rooms connected to high-speed Internet and equipped with versatile teaching technology to enable both faculty and students to fully engage with learning in a technology-driven world.
“TCC’s presence is a good fit for the community because any time you can educate your population, you gain as a city. This translates to better paying jobs and more disposable income,” said Tommy Carner, Mayor of Glenpool. “A city seems to thrive when it is home to a college campus of any size and that is exactly why we wanted TCC here.”
So far, since the Glenpool Community Campus opened its doors, more than 1,300 students have taken credit classes and dozens of others – adults and children – have participated in continuing education and College for Kids classes. A total of 187 classes have been offered in a variety of subject areas.
TCC’s Glenpool Community Campus offers day and night classes. The campus is open and available to all TCC students, whether they choose to take a class or use it as a study resource that is closer to home. The hope is that the TCC Glenpool Community Campus will become a heavily used resource for students throughout this region of the TCC service area.
