Tulsa Community College made the holiday season a little brighter and warmer for area families this year with events that collected canned food and coats and blankets. TCC was also a partner in a toy run that collected toys and raised money for scholarships.
TCC Student Government Association hosted a coat and blanket drive on all campuses. The students collected blankets, clothes and more than 75 coats. In addition, Blanket America donated 400 blankets to the student effort. All the items collected were donated to the Day Center for the Homeless.
“The feeling of helping those who can't help themselves just warms my heart especially this time of the year when it's getting cold,” saidTony Burks, TCC SGA Treasurer at Metro Campus. “It was a pleasure to put together this coat and blanket drive. I was homeless twice before so I can totally relate to those who are homeless.”
While students and faculty were busy filling boxes with clothes, TCC staff at the Conference Center collected food during a month-long food drive to benefit the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma.
“The response has been very good and we filled four large boxes,” said Susan Sanders with TCC Human Resources.
She said the collections totaled 210 pounds which translates into 175 meals.
In November, the Student Activities office at TCC’s West Campus partnered with a local group for the Hannah Christian & Cassidy Rotramel Memorial Toy Run.
Roughly 400 people gathered at TCC’s West Campus prior to the toy run where student organizations sold coffee and doughnuts to the riders.
The toy run raised 610 toys for the Salvation Army Angel Tree with donations topping $13,000 for college and university scholarships.
“This holiday fund raising event is mutually benefiting to TCC West Campus students and the greater Sand Springs community,” said Dr. Peggy Dyer, TCC Provost.
The toy run honors the memory of Christian and Rotramel who were killed in a car wreck three years ago. They were best friends and active in the community, Dyer said.
