Tulsa Community College has announced plans to build a stand-alone Physical Therapy Clinic across the street from its Metro Campus. The Clinic will allow students to gain required clinical experience in treating patients and provide physical therapy treatment at a reduced cost to the public. Right now, TCC students must travel a four-state region to find clinics where they can complete their rotations.
“TCC’s Physical Therapy Clinic will be a resource for the community by providing physical therapy to patients in need as well as providing clinical learning opportunities for the students,” said TCC President Tom McKeon. “This is about creating opportunities for our students, preparing them for a career and keeping them in the Tulsa metro area as professionals.”
Currently, TCC students work with up to four patients a week but once the Clinic is completed, the patient capacity will increase to 40 a week and drastically impact services available for the uninsured and the disadvantaged in Tulsa. “The need for quality physical therapy in Tulsa is much greater than what the TCC Physical Therapist Assistant program is able to handle in its current setting,” said Suzanne Reese, associate dean of Allied Health Services at TCC.
TCC launched the public fundraising campaign after investing $768,000 dollars to buy the building at 815 S. Cincinnati Ave. After the final phase of the public campaign, the new clinic will provide 8,000 square feet for classroom, office and lab space for the Physical Therapy Assistant program. TCC’s Foundation is leading the fundraising campaign which is nearly 85% completed with donations from St. Francis Health System, Morningcrest Healthcare Foundation, Founders of Doctors’ Hospital, Osteopathic Founders Foundation, Mary Ann Hille and the Hille Foundation, and Suzanne Reese.
“We are proud that TCC is making this commitment to our students and to the community by creating what will be a shining example of excellence in education and treatment,” said McKeon.
Since unveiling the plans to build the new Clinic in late October, private funds have been contributed towards the project. TCC hopes to have the new Physical Therapy Clinic operational in 2014.
