I am Suzanne Reese, Associate Dean of Allied Health and I am happy that you are interested in the many health education programs offered by Tulsa Community College through the Allied Health Division. I have been a physical therapist for over 30 years and I will tell you that being a health care provider is a very rewarding profession. Allied Health care professionals include respiratory therapists, phlebotomists, medical assistants, and other professionals who work to help others in a medical setting. Although there are different types of healthcare professionals they all require the same characteristics and traits. You will need the ability to manage stress, be service oriented, empathetic, and have great interpersonal skills in order to pursue a successful career. Other traits that are beneficial are high level of physical endurance, the ability to problem solve, and respect for others.
It is important to note that all of the allied health programs require every student to have proof of all immunizations, a negative drug screen, CPR certification, and a negative TB test. Plus, each student must submit to a national background check so past convictions or legal infractions may prevent the students’ progression through any of the health care programs.
Once you successfully complete a program, you can find work in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, pharmacies, and medical laboratories as well as other medical facilities. If you feel that a professional career in health care may be right for you, I encourage you to closely examine the programs offered here at Tulsa Community College at the Southeast Campus, Downtown-Metro Campus and the newly opened Owasso Campus.
