8th Grade Reading Proficiency Exam for State of Oklahoma Driver's Licenses
***ATTENTION*** Until further notice, TCC will NOT be administering the 8th Grade Reading Exam.
Individuals under the age of 18 who apply for a State of Oklahoma Driver's License to operate a motor vehicle are required to present documentation of reading proficiency at the eighth-grade level. The State Department of Education has approved several testing instruments that can be used to demonstrate reading proficiency at the eighth-grade level.
The exam is administered at Tulsa Community College to individuals under the age of 18 who are:
- attending a non-accredited private school
- attending a public school
- working toward a Certificate of High School Equivalency, or
- not in school but have been approved for employment of at least 24 hours per week.
Public, private or home-school students: $10 per testing session.

Testing is done on a walk-in basis (based on computer availability).
This examination is untimed; however, examinees should allow approximately one to one and one-half hours to complete the exam and all paperwork.
*Please note that we will not begin an 8th Grade Reading exam less than 1 hour prior to closing time.
There is no registration required for this exam; however, all individuals must bring an original birth certificate or photo identification that lists legal name and birthdate (i.e., state ID or passport) to the Northeast Campus Testing Center on the day of testing. A copy of the birth certificate or photo ID will be made and kept on file in the Testing Center.
